This paper reflects on the idea of creativity vis-a-vis the work of an educator of design who is a designer of education spaces. In particular, this paper will examine how the combination of three distinct activities ('designing', 'building', and 'using') relates to the production of new learning environments and offers a unique perspective that may be attributable, or contributing, to creativity. The paper will also discuss the ways that designers contribute to other disciplines by transporting a knowledge base from one school of thought or practice to another. Whereas this may have been a useful skill in the past, it has become a critical and contemporary issue. The different worlds of design practice and of design teaching are struggling with a kind of identity crisis that is forcing each to confront methodological, critical, ideological, and functional challenges at the same time. While identity crises in design are not uncommon, the wave of complex issues associated with knowledge management has reached its doorstep again. Already a well established issue in many disciplines, this has only recently become a critical problem for a very wide spectrum of designers. Thus, both practitioners and academics have begun once again to reflect on what 'design' will mean in the future, and the myriad of ways in which it is courted and assumed by communities as diverse as engineering, business administration, public policy, and as is the case here - anthropology.
