The
CISD focuses on methods and materials for the annotation (and therefore parsing) of
conversational acts.
The group has written a very interesting manual on the annotation of
argumentation acts.

The contribution of methods such as these to my research could be enormous given the almost constant value of "argumentation" within pedagogy. Particularly in a
critique.
At issue is a way of better understanding our pedagogical motives, tactics, activity, and therefore the interaction (and of course the design) of spaces for education, or perhaps better said; pedagogy.

At this point, there is a VERY fine line (I would argue non-existant line) between architecture, interaction, and display.

The "holodeck" is really just a bunch of large displays hooked up to gaming systems. But the Wired author's description of the sphere and halfpipe seem very intriguing (albeit nauseating).
Holdek Gaming Inc.'s own website. The
sphere and the
halfpipe.
A short article on the holodeck (local news).
I think that seeing something like this actually built and in business is a very interesting step. I would have liked to see a real halfpipe or bowl though...
like this.
This sort of immersive structure could really be very interesting. Imagine rear projection with something like this?!

bye bye blackboard... . An interesting exhibition on the history of the blackboard. The exhibition included a series of events that brought distinguished speakers to speak on the history of cosmology (who were only allowed to use a single blackboard for their talk).

I found this while trying to find some references on the history of the
blackboard. At this year's
CHI Conference,
Bill Buxton and I were speaking about the importance of the blackboard and its history. He seemed convinced that it was the single most important contribution to the design of classrooms and the generation of the architectural type that we call a "
classroom" today.
So what is so important about the blackboard?

DAMSL is a way of marking up a dialog between participants in a "high level" way. This means that a researcher can compare the structures of multiple dialogs.
I hope to modify this markup syntax to use it for my research on multiple displays as I continue to investigate this idea of an interaction "
threshold" in education environment interactions.
More to come...

I need a controlled experiment... thank god for Jie-Eun!!!
No rant... just keeping track of thoughts.

Jie-Eun emailed me last night at 3 AM... and I am so happy that she is a late nighter. I seriously owe her for an excellent idea for a good controlled experiment to study how effective the use of multiple displays really is.
The experiment will use an online jigsaw puzzle in three different cases. Each session of the experiment will end when all members of the test group complete the puzzles they have been given. Teams can choose to work on the puzzles any way they choose (collaboratively or individually).
Case 1:
Users will use only their own computers to display and interact with the puzzles.
Case 2:
Users will share a single display (plus the use of their own laptops).
Case 3:
Users will each have their own large display as well as their own laptop screen.
